Description:
Abstract:
This data set represents water use reported to the Michigan Department of Agriculture by agricultural producers in the state that met water pumping capacity thresholds during the 2004 calendar year. Water use is reported in gallons of water used, and is aggregated by political township and county in Michigan. This is attribute data that can be associated with political township spatial data files for mapping purposes.
Purpose:
The agricultural water use reporting data fulfills the Michigan Department of Agriculture’s statutory reporting requirements under Part 327 of the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act of 1994 (Act 451 of the Public Acts of 1994).

Use_Constraints:
The Michigan Department of Agriculture, Environmental Stewardship Division should be acknowledged as the data source in products derived from these data.
The 2004 agricultural water use reporting was aggregated primarily to meet the department’s legal requirements under Part 327 of P.A. 451 of 1994. The data may be of some use for multicounty, large river basin, State, and multistate resource planning, management, and monitoring. The agricultural water use reporting data are not detailed enough to make interpretations at a county level or finer resolution. The use of these data is not restricted and may be interpreted by organizations, agencies, units of government, or others; however, they are responsible for its appropriate application.
Digital overlays and intersections of these data to scales greater than at which they were originally aggregated can cause misinterpretation of the data. Thus, these data and their interpretations are intended for planning purposes only.

Attribute_Accuracy:
Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Accuracy of the data will be estimated by comparison of disaggregated data collected by the source with confidential data collected by the Michigan Agricultural Statistics Service. It is expected to be highly variable, with some data being quite accurate, and other township totals being off by an order of magnitude or more.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Completeness_Report:
Preliminary analysis of this data indicates that agricultural water user compliance with Part 327 of P.A. 451 of 1994 was quite variable, based on comparison to county level irrigation data published by the National Agricultural Statistics Service for 2002.

Process_Description:
Water use reporting forms were mailed to all agricultural producers who registered with the department. Forms were also made available on the department’s web site. Data mailed back to the department was entered into a database. Water use was attributed to political townships based on reported data. Water use was reported in gallons, acre-feet, and acre-inches. Water use was converted into gallons for consistency. Obvious errors made by reporting producers were corrected; otherwise, all data was entered as reported. Water use was then aggregated by county and political township.
